Clean Body Wash & Soap: Toxic Ingredients to Avoid + Safer Alternatives
In a world increasingly aware of what goes into our bodies, many are now asking an equally important question: What are we putting on our bodies? The body wash or soap you use daily might seem harmless, but a deeper dive reveals that many conventional products contain harmful ingredients that can impact our skin and overall health. The good news? There are safer, cleaner alternatives for us and our families.
In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the hidden dangers in everyday soaps and body washes, break down how our skin absorbs chemicals, and provide non-toxic ingredient alternatives to look for. Whether you’re a wellness enthusiast or simply looking to clean up your routine, this is your ultimate resource for body wash that truly cleans without the chemicals.
Our skin is our largest organ and plays a critical role in absorbing the substances we expose it to. In fact, scientific studies have shown that the skin can absorb a significant percentage of what we apply to it—especially on thinner, more sensitive areas like the face, underarms, and groin.
A 2006 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that certain chemicals in water could be absorbed through the skin at rates as high as 64%, and other studies have detected personal care product chemicals in human blood, urine, and even breast milk. Simply put: the ingredients in your body wash and soap don’t just wash off—they can linger and impact your health in ways you may not realize.
Hidden Ingredients in Body Wash + Soap
Many conventional body washes and soaps are loaded with ingredients designed to make products foam, smell good, and last longer—but these often come with a hidden cost. Unfortunately, we are often unknowingly applying these hidden chemicals to our body when we are trying to make ourselves clean.
Common offenders include sulfates, including sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), which are harsh surfactants known to irritate skin and strip away its natural moisture barrier.
Parabens, which are preservatives used to extend shelf life, mimic estrogen in the body and have been linked to hormone disruption and even detected in breast tumor tissue. Parabens have also been shown to accumulate in the body over time, raising concerns about their potential long-term effects on hormone balance and reproductive health.
Phthalates, typically used to make fragrances stick to your skin, are also hormone disruptors and have been associated with developmental and reproductive issues. They are particularly worrisome because they can disrupt the endocrine system even at low levels of exposure, and they’re often hidden in products under vague terms like “fragrance.”
Another sneaky ingredient is triclosan, an antimicrobial once popular in antibacterial soaps that has been banned in some countries due to its potential link to thyroid issues and bacterial resistance—but it still shows up in some products.
Even more concerning are formaldehyde-releasing preservatives like DMDM hydantoin, which slowly release a known human carcinogen into your daily routine. Formaldehyde is classified as a known human carcinogen by the U.S. National Toxicology Program, and even low-level, repeated exposure through personal care products can contribute to cumulative health risks over time.
Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, such as DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, and imidazolidinyl urea, slowly break down over time or when exposed to heat, light, or water, releasing formaldehyde as a byproduct. This chemical release helps prevent microbial growth in products, but it also means that users are exposed to small, continuous amounts of formaldehyde with each use without it even being listed on the label.
One of the biggest red flags on a body wash or soap label is the term “fragrance.” While it sounds harmless, “fragrance” or “parfum” is often a catch-all term that can include hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and skin irritation.
Because companies aren’t required to reveal what’s in their proprietary scent blends, it’s nearly impossible to know what you’re really being exposed to. That’s why it’s so important to choose products that are transparent about their ingredients and use naturally derived scents—like essential oils—instead.

Clean Ingredient Alternatives
The good news is that there are plenty of non-toxic, effective ingredients that can cleanse, nourish, and protect your skin—without the health risks associated with synthetic chemicals. These clean alternatives come from nature and work with your body’s biology, not against it.
One of the most versatile and skin-compatible ingredients is tallow, a traditional fat derived from grass-fed beef suet. While it may sound unconventional today, tallow has been used for centuries in soapmaking and skincare due to its high compatibility with human skin.
It’s rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with conjugated linoleic acid and stearic acid, which support the skin’s natural barrier and promote healthy cell regeneration. Because its composition closely mimics our skin’s own sebum, tallow-based soaps and body washes can be incredibly moisturizing and soothing, especially for dry or sensitive skin.
Coconut oil and coco-glucoside are also excellent alternatives. Coconut oil is naturally antimicrobial and deeply moisturizing, while coco-glucoside—a gentle surfactant derived from coconut oil and sugar—provides effective cleansing without stripping the skin of its natural oils. These ingredients are especially helpful for those with eczema, dermatitis, or easily irritated skin.
Olive oil is another time-honored ingredient, famously used in Castile soaps. Rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids, olive oil supports skin hydration, elasticity, and overall resilience. It helps cleanse without disrupting the microbiome or causing dryness, making it ideal for daily use.
Shea butter is a powerhouse moisturizer full of essential fatty acids and vitamins. It’s known for calming inflammation, boosting skin elasticity, and promoting healing, making it perfect for body washes aimed at restoring dry, damaged skin. Similarly, cocoa butter adds a layer of emollience that locks in moisture and protects against environmental stressors.
Aloe vera is another soothing hero, known for its ability to hydrate, reduce inflammation, and support wound healing. It’s especially useful in clean body washes formulated for after-sun care or sensitive skin.
Colloidal oatmeal, made by finely grinding oats, is a powerful ingredient for calming irritated or itchy skin. It creates a soothing barrier and helps lock in moisture, making it a popular choice for products formulated for children or those with eczema.
Natural scents can be achieved using pure essential oils, like lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, or tea tree oil—each offering unique benefits ranging from antimicrobial action to mood-enhancing aromatherapy. Unlike synthetic “fragrances,” essential oils are typically well-tolerated in clean formulations (though it’s still wise to patch test, especially for sensitive skin).
Other plant-based oils like jojoba, sweet almond, avocado, and argan oil are frequently used in clean soaps and body washes for their nourishing, non-comedogenic properties. Jojoba oil, for example, closely resembles human sebum, making it an excellent moisturizer that won’t clog pores.
Clean Body Wash + Soap Brands
When you choose body care products made with these clean ingredients, you’re supporting your skin’s natural function, avoiding harsh chemicals, and reducing your exposure to potential toxins. Whether you prefer a rich, nourishing tallow soap or a gentle, plant-based wash, there are many effective and health-conscious options available today.
Toups + Co. Organics
Toups & Co. Organics has quickly become a standout in the world of clean skincare, and their handcrafted soaps are a prime example of why. Made in small batches using traditional methods, Toups & Co. soaps prioritize transparency, simplicity, and purity—three qualities often missing in the mainstream personal care industry.
Their formulas are free from synthetic fragrances, harsh detergents, parabens, and other toxic additives, making them a truly non-toxic alternative for those looking to reduce their chemical exposure without compromising on quality or effectiveness.
What sets Toups & Co. soaps apart is their use of nourishing, nutrient-dense ingredients like grass-fed tallow, organic olive oil, coconut oil, and essential oils. Tallow, a key ingredient in many of their bars, is deeply moisturizing and rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K—offering skin-loving benefits that plant oils alone often can’t provide.
Because tallow closely mimics the composition of our skin’s natural oils, it supports barrier function, hydration, and overall skin health, especially for those with sensitive or dry skin. Combined with other clean ingredients like shea butter, clay, and botanical extracts, each bar delivers a luxurious lather and gentle cleanse that leaves skin soft, calm, and nourished.
Toups & Co. Organics doesn’t just make soap—they uphold a philosophy of radical transparency and holistic wellness. Their commitment to sourcing high-quality, ethically raised ingredients and formulating without compromises has earned them a loyal following among clean beauty advocates, families, and those with reactive or eczema-prone skin.
If you’re seeking a soap that’s truly clean, deeply nourishing, and crafted with intention, Toups & Co. Organics is one of the best options on the market today. Toups is our family’s favorite choice for clean soap that leaves our skin feeling nourished and smelling amazing. Our favorites (and many others) include the French Green Clay Soap for its detoxifying yet hydrating properties, the Activated Charcoal Face Bar for its cleansing and microbiome balancing effects, and the Lavendar Tallow Soap for its calming and straightforward ingredients.
Another favorite product I use as a “body wash” and to shave my legs is Toups Organic Body Oil. While technically not a body wash, it’s still my absolute favorite for shaving, leaving my skin silky soft and moisturized with no razor burn or bumps! Making the switch to clean body care can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Start by replacing one product at a time as you run out. Tools like the EWG’s Skin Deep Database can be helpful to check product safety ratings, but are not fool proof. Not every product is listed and some apps still consider artificial fragrance safe. Your best defense is learning what ingredients to stay away from.
For extremely sensitive skin, a patch test can be beneficial when trying something new. While there may be a short adjustment period as your skin adapts, most people find that their skin feels less irritated, more hydrated, and healthier overall after switching to non-toxic options.
