Best Non-Toxic Hair Care Products (Stylist Recommended)

Hey there, gorgeous! If you’re as obsessed with luscious, healthy locks and clean beauty products as I am, you know that the secret to great hair isn’t just about what you do—it’s about what you use. Your hair deserves products and tools that not only work wonders but are also safe for your health.

So, I’ve rounded up my top non-toxic hair products that I’d recommend to every client sitting in my chair. I believe you can have high quality professional hair care products that won’t harm your health AND work incredibly! 

Yes, I have tested and tried SO many products in the natural haircare space. Over the years I would test out a clean brand knowing I should make the change, but wouldn’t love the brands I was trying. I would default back to my usual salon brands. After all, they need to work.

But, over the past few years my sensitivities to fragrance and certain ingredients only grew. I began the deep dive into ingredients and was forced to face the ugly truth of how toxic our beauty products really are.

So, I tested out more products and finally found some clean and organic lines that perform just as well or better than the traditional ones. I’ll be honest, some clean hair products work great while others, not so much. I hope you love these products just as much as I do. The last thing we want is a vanity full of products collecting dust that we never use! You might even be able to guess my favorite brand;)

Harmful Ingredients in Hair Care Products

When it comes to personal care, what we put on our bodies can be just as important as what we put in them. Hair styling products—like gels, sprays, mousses, and pomades—are often used daily and can contain a wide array of chemicals that may negatively impact our health.

Clean styling products aim to reduce or eliminate potentially harmful ingredients, favoring non-toxic, naturally derived components. Opting for cleaner formulas not only reduces chemical exposure but also supports long-term hair and scalp health, hormonal balance, and even overall well-being.

One major concern in conventional styling products is the use of phthalates, commonly found in synthetic fragrances. Phthalates are endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which mimic or interfere with hormones in the body, particularly estrogen.

According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), exposure to EDCs like phthalates has been linked to reproductive issues, developmental problems, and increased risk of hormone-related cancers. Clean styling products avoid synthetic fragrances and often opt for essential oils and naturally derived scent compounds instead.

Another ingredient to be wary of is formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, such as DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, and imidazolidinyl urea. These are used to prolong shelf life but can release formaldehyde over time—a known human carcinogen according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Prolonged exposure through the scalp or inhalation (especially during heat styling) may pose respiratory issues and increase cancer risk. Clean hair products avoid these and opt for safer preservatives like potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate.

Parabens are another class of preservatives that have raised health concerns. Found in many styling products, parabens (e.g., methylparaben, propylparaben) can also act as endocrine disruptors. Studies have shown that they can be absorbed through the skin and have been detected in human tissues, including breast tissue. While definitive conclusions about their long-term effects are still evolving, many health-conscious consumers prefer to err on the side of caution by avoiding them altogether—something clean beauty brands take seriously.

Clean styling products also avoid aerosol propellants like butane and isobutane, often found in hair sprays and dry shampoos. These volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can contribute to indoor air pollution and may cause headaches, dizziness, or skin irritation in sensitive individuals. In contrast, non-aerosol and pump alternatives use air or non-toxic gases to deliver the product without sacrificing performance.

It’s also important to avoid silicones like dimethicone or cyclopentasiloxane. While they provide temporary shine and smoothness, they can build up on the scalp and hair shaft, trapping dirt and preventing moisture from penetrating the hair. Some cyclic silicones are also suspected environmental pollutants and may bioaccumulate. Clean products often substitute these with plant oils like argan, jojoba, or flaxseed, which nourish the hair naturally without the long-term buildup.

Using clean styling products is not just a trend—it’s a proactive health choice. By avoiding ingredients linked to hormone disruption, carcinogenicity, and environmental harm, you reduce your toxic load and support a healthier body and planet.

Science continues to emphasize the importance of minimizing unnecessary exposure to harmful chemicals, and hair care is a particularly effective place to start. Clean beauty isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about aligning your beauty routine with your health values.

Every person has to make the decision what they will allow in the products they use. I tried to make each choice with the cleanest ingredients in mind. Some products, no matter how quality the ingredients are, still require elements that make the product work. Keep this in mind as you decide what is the right product for you.

All dry shampoos are not created equal. I love this unique foam to powder approach to dry shampoo that nourishes both your scalp and your hair. Tapioca starch will help absorb excess unwanted oils without the powdery residue so many dry shampoos leave behind. 

This foamy dry shampoo will “wet” your roots a little with application. I love this because I feel cleaner, and the excess oil is absorbed well. Pro tip, use your blow dryer at the root after dry shampoo application to get another boost of volume!

3. Innersense Serenity Smoothing Cream

My favorite go-to hair cream! This silky lotion will smooth dry and frizzy hair and leave you with a gorgeous blow out. This is great for medium to thick hair, but I like a tiny amount for long, fine hair for a little extra smooth, too. 

I usually apply to towel dried hair before combing through as the cream is a great detangler. The smoothing cream can also be applied to dry hair for a finishing touch to calm any excess frizz.

Detangle and hydrate with this versatile leave in mist. Great for your long hair and your littles too! This leave in conditioner is unique and versatile as you can use on wet hair to detangle, or dry hair in between wash days to rejuvenate and restyle! Who doesn’t love a good multipurpose product.

This is my favorite clarifier!! Clean off pesky build up from a greasy scalp and lifeless hair to renew your hair’s movement and color. This unique clarifying treatment mask uses natural ingredients like charcoal, Kaolin Clay, and Certified Organic White Vinegar to clean off any unwanted build up products and water leave behind. 

Depending on your hair or water, use once a week or every other week according to your hair’s needs. We have extremely hard water in our home and this mask always leaves my hair feeling clean and rejuvenated!

Luxurious and effective, this mask repairs and rejuvenates and repairs dry, damaged hair. It’s worth every penny for the shine and softness it delivers.

The thick and creamy texture, leave even the most dry and coarse hair feeling silky smooth and hydrated. Apply after shampooing and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Finish your style with this workable propellant free hair spray. Layer this versatile hairspray for the hold you are looking for complimented with a light Lavendar scent. 

This Hairspray is perfect for those who prefer a pump hair spray. Add hold with a second coat. As with most pump hairsprays, the mist is a bit “wet”. Allow each coat to dry before adding another layer for extra hold.

2. Natulique Medium Hold Hair Spray

For those who can’t go without an aerosol hairspray, this medium hold spray will give you long-lasting workable hold while still looking natural. With no synthetic thickeners and an aerosol that is Bio DME gas, you can be assured of the highest organic quality with an excellent rating on Yuka.

I like this flexible spray for moveable curls that last all day. I spray a light amount all over, brush through, and curl. This hairspray is also great to smooth frizz for straight styles. Simply spray a light coat over hair, brush through and straighten.

If you prefer an aerosol alternate, opt for this non-toxic powder dry shampoo. It absorbs oil and adds volume without any harmful ingredients. With both a light and dark option, avoid that pesky dry shampoo residue with options for blondes and brunettes alike.

I love this dry shampoo for both oil absorption and to add a little texture to your style. Simply sprinkle a little on a finished style to rough up the texture for a lived-in look.
