Why You Need to Clean Out Your Beauty Supplies for a Healthier, Simpler Life
It’s time for a little heart-to-heart. We declutter our closets, we tidy up our homes, and we strive to create peaceful, God-honoring spaces—but when was the last time you cleaned out your beauty supplies? If your makeup bag or bathroom counter is overflowing with half-used foundations, expired mascaras, and skincare products with unreadable ingredient lists, it’s time to detox your beauty routine.
Let’s talk about why simplifying your beauty products is not just good for your space, but also for your health, your soul, and your morning routine. And most importantly, I want to encourage you to swap out toxic products for healthier, non-toxic alternatives that honor the body God has given you.
1. A Simpler Morning Routine Brings More Peace
Mornings should be about peace, gratitude, and preparing our hearts for the day ahead—not about digging through a pile of lipsticks to find the right shade! Clutter in our beauty routine leads to unnecessary stress, decision fatigue, and wasted time.
When you cut down to just the essentials, your morning routine becomes a simple, joy-filled ritual instead of a frantic scramble. Imagine opening a beautifully organized drawer with just a few high-quality, non-toxic products that make you feel radiant and confident in minutes. Less truly is more.
Start by asking yourself: What products do I actually use every day? If something has been sitting in your makeup bag for months untouched, it’s time to let it go. Simplifying your collection helps you focus on what truly serves you and allows you to start your day with a calm, intentional heart.

2. Expired Beauty Products Can Harm Your Health
I know how easy it is to hang on to a favorite lipstick or a special eyeshadow palette for years—but did you know that makeup and skincare products expire? Using expired products can lead to skin irritation, infections, and breakouts.
Most makeup has a small jar symbol with a number inside—this tells you how many months the product is good for after opening. Mascara should be replaced every 3-6 months, foundation and concealer last about a year, and powders can last up to two years.
Here’s a quick guide for when to toss your products:
- Mascara & Liquid Eyeliner: 3-6 months
- Foundation & Concealer: 6-12 months
- Lipstick & Lip Gloss: 1-2 years
- Powder Products (Blush, Bronzer, Eyeshadow): 2 years
- Skincare Products: 6-12 months (check the packaging for expiration dates!)
Take a moment today to go through your beauty collection and toss anything that’s past its prime. Your skin will thank you! And if you haven’t used it up in the alotted timeframe, is it a product you use often enough to restock?
3. Toxins in Beauty Products: What You Put on Your Body Matters
The beauty industry is full of products that promise flawless skin and youthful radiance—but many of them are loaded with harmful chemicals. Our skin is our largest organ, and what we put on it gets absorbed into our bloodstream.
Common toxic ingredients in beauty products include:
- Parabens (linked to hormone disruption)
- Phthalates (associated with reproductive issues)
- Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (known carcinogens)
- Synthetic fragrances (which can trigger allergies and disrupt hormones)
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) (a harsh detergent that can irritate skin and eyes)
The Bible tells us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20), and that means we should be mindful of what we put on and in them. Swapping out toxic beauty products for clean, nourishing alternatives is one way we can honor the body God has given us.
I can tell you from experience that the toxins in beauty products often have side effects we would never realize. For example, perfumes and heavily scented products often give me an instant headache. My brain literally hurts, and I feel like my thinking ability slows.
The more I began to pay attention to the signals my body was giving me, the more I realized just how much the things we use every day affect us, not just on the outside but also on the inside.
When my head hurts, I lose ambition and the ability to concentrate. Just like you, my life is busy, and I don’t want petty things like perfume to impede my schedule or affect my ability to walk out my purpose.
It may sound trivial, but I can’t stress enough-pay attention to your body! Symptoms like headaches, rashes, breakouts, and irritation are all signals your body is trying to tell you that something is not right. Listen and take note of even the smallest of symptoms. If your skin is itchy or irritated, could it be a result of the product you just put on?

4. How to Transition to Non-Toxic Beauty Products
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the idea of replacing your products, take a deep breath. You don’t have to do it all at once! Transitioning to a clean beauty routine is a journey, not a sprint. Here’s how you can start:
- Use Up or Toss What You Already Have – If a product is expired or filled with toxic ingredients, it’s time to let it go. For products that are still good but not the best for your health, use them up while researching cleaner replacements.
- Swap One Product at a Time – Start with the products you use daily or cover a large area of your body, like foundation, mascara, deodorant, or moisturizer. When you run out of something, replace it with a non-toxic version instead of repurchasing the old one. My go-to clean brands are Toups & Co. Organics and Innersense Organic Beauty!
- Look for Certifications – Brands that are certified organic or EWG Verified are a great place to start. Apps like Think Dirty or the EWG Skin Deep database can help you check the safety of your current products. However, these apps are not foolproof. Learning to read labels and what ingredients to stay away from is your best option.
- Simplify Your Routine – You don’t need a 10-step skincare routine or a drawer full of makeup. A few high-quality, multi-purpose products can do wonders while keeping your beauty routine simple and stress-free.

5. The Beauty of Less: A Minimalist Approach to Beauty
In a world that constantly tells us we need more—more makeup, more skincare, more products—it’s revolutionary to embrace less. When we strip away the excess, we’re left with what truly matters.
Jesus Himself lived a simple, intentional life, and we can reflect that in how we care for our bodies. Having fewer, better beauty products means less waste, less clutter, and less time spent on unnecessary decisions. It frees us to focus on what truly matters—our faith, our purpose, and the beauty that shines from within.

6. A Prayer for Your Beauty Routine
As you embark on this journey of cleaning out your beauty supplies and embracing a healthier, more holistic approach, let’s take a moment to invite God into this process.
Heavenly Father, thank You for the body You have given me. Help me to be a good steward of my health, my time, and my resources. Guide me as I simplify my beauty routine, choosing products that nourish rather than harm. Let my beauty shine from within, reflecting Your love, grace, and light. Amen.
Final Encouragement: Beauty That Honors Your Body and Soul
Cleaning out your beauty supplies isn’t just about decluttering—it’s about creating a routine that aligns with your values, supports your health, and brings you peace. It’s about choosing products that honor your body as a temple and allow your natural God-given beauty to shine.
So, take some time this week to go through your beauty stash. Toss the expired products, swap out the toxic ones, and simplify your routine. I promise you’ll feel lighter, healthier, and more radiant—inside and out.
You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), and your beauty is so much more than what’s in your makeup bag. Let’s embrace a holistic, faith-filled approach to beauty—one that reflects the grace and peace of our Creator.
Blessings and beauty, Ashley🤍
