Do you ever wonder what the Bible has to say about drinking coffee?

Morning coffee is the beverage of choice for millions of people around the world. It helps boost your energy, enhance your mood, make you productive, help you focus and concentrate at work, and even calm you when you’re feeling anxious and stressed.

While the actual word coffee doesn’t appear in the word of God, these 21 interesting Bible verses on drinking coffee are based on biblical principles and insights that we can use to apply when it comes to this drink.

This caffeinated beverage provides comfort when we’re alone but can also provide an opportunity for connection and fellowship with others. It helps to build relationships and strong bonds and it’s an important part of our daily lives.

As we go through the Bible verses on drinking coffee, biblical principles such as love,  gratitude, fellowship, hospitality, generosity, and wisdom will guide our approach to enjoying this drink.

What Does the Bible Say About Coffee?

Any coffee lover would agree that coffee helps you start your day especially if you’re not a morning person. The aroma of coffee is one of the best ways to wake up, get energized, and be motivated to tackle the long day ahead.

Nothing goes better with my Bible time than a comforting cup of coffee. Often for me, a cup of coffee goes hand in hand with my Bible study time. So what does the Bible say about coffee?

These interesting Bible verses on drinking coffee will be of great help to coffee lovers to help us enjoy the routine, refreshment, rest, reflection, and relationships that we are encouraged to build through the enjoyment of coffee.

You can even have these scriptures printed on your favorite coffee mug!

God cares about the lives of his people and warns us about addiction including caffeine addiction. It’s not just the weak person in faith who is at risk of addiction but we all are.

At the end of the day, God’s will is that we would prioritize him above all things and not replace him as a source for everything we need.

Bible Verses About Coffee

A morning cup of coffee is one of the best ways to start the day.  While the actual word for coffee is not in the word of God, these scriptures can be applied to drinking coffee.

As we thank God for the small pleasures of life and even the refreshment of coffee these scriptures are great to think about, reflect on, and find comfort in during your enjoyment of coffee.

These scriptures are great to print on Christian coffee mugs or to write out and place on your fridge or anywhere in your home.

Let’s take a deep dive into my favorite Bible verses about coffee.

1. 1 Timothy 4:4-5 NIV

“For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.”

This is such a great scripture about coffee. God has only created good things including coffee which we are to receive with gratitude and honor God for his blessings. It helps us reflect and find rest in him during our morning time.

2. Colossians 3:17 NIV

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

We have to honor God in everything we do even as we drink a refreshing cup of morning coffee. As coffee lovers, it’s all about being grateful to God for his blessings, refreshment, energy boost, and productivity that coffee helps us with.

3. 1 Corinthians 6:12 NIV

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.

In Christ Jesus, we have the freedom to do anything. But we should not take advantage of that freedom by doing what opposes God’s laws and causes us to sin. God is our own master and will not allow anything including coffee to master us.

4. Psalm 104:14-15 NIV

“He makes grass grow for the cattle,

and plants for people to cultivate—

bringing forth food from the earth:

 wine that gladdens human hearts,

oil to make their faces shine,

and bread that sustains their hearts.”

This scripture reminds us of God’s provision in terms of food options and drinks to sustain both animals and people. His love for us shines through in this verse and he not only cares about our spirit and souls but about our physical health too and what we consume.

5. Hebrews 10:25 NIV

“not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

When you are going through real and practical problems, discussing these with someone that cares over a cup of coffee gets us to share our lives, support one another and show love and care.

In our homes and away from them as well, coffee helps us create unity, fellowship, hospitality, generosity, community, and relationships with others which is something that God’s word encourages as well.

6. 1 John 2:15-16 ESV

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”

Coffee is of this world. The Bible warns us not to love coffee too much but enjoy it in moderation.

We mustn’t be addicted to it to the extent that we idolize it and it becomes our main source of strength, joy, and comfort. God is our eternal source after all and the world and all its pleasures will pass away.

7. Psalm 71:5 ESV

“For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth.”

As a coffee lover, it should not master you but it must be a “nice to have beverage”. You can start the day without coffee because your hope, trust, and strength are not in this strong beverage but in the Lord God Almighty.

8. James 1:17 NIV

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

Every good thing we have is from the Lord God. He gives us great friends, family members, food options, and even great drinks like coffee.

He is the giver of all things and as you sip your morning coffee appreciate all that he has created.  Remember though that you should not love the gift more than the Giver.

9. Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart;

do not depend on your own understanding.

Seek his will in all you do,

and he will show you which path to take.”

God’s word encourages us to trust him with our whole hearts and not rely on our own understanding. He is the priority in our lives and when we put him first, he guides us on the right path to follow.

Bible verse about all glory to God-1 Corinthians 10:31

 10. 1 Corinthians 10:31 NLT

“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

One of the most important biblical principles you will learn in your Christian life is to do everything for the glory of God. He is the one we serve. So even as you wake up for quiet time and have your morning coffee do it for his glory.

11. Isaiah 41:10 ESV

“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

It’s not coffee that strengthens and upholds us when we are scared but it’s the Lord God who does. He helps us overcome fear through his presence and provision.

So, while morning coffee is one of the best ways to start the day, God’s strength is truly what sustains us throughout the day.

12. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

Christ Jesus paid the highest price for our salvation through his death. He asks us to honor God with our bodies making sure we take care of them and nourish them. Because your body is a temple of the holy ghost, you must honor God with it.

That means staying away from addiction of any kind, even caffeine addiction. Christian life means we don’t put anything in our bodies that harms it or make us crave it more than we crave God’s presence.

13. Revelation 12:11 NIV

“They triumphed over him

by the blood of the Lamb

    and by the word of their testimony;

they did not love their lives so much

    as to shrink from death.”

We conquer because of the blood of the lamb who died for us on the cross and by sharing our testimony. This verse reminds us of the true source of our victory and strength.

14. Proverbs 20:1 ESV

“Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.”

Just like wine and beer, a strong drink like coffee comes with the risk of addiction and a lack of control. The Bible encourages us to be wise and exercise self-control by having these drinks in moderation.

15. Romans 12:1-2 ESV

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Renewing of your mind as a believer includes prioritizing the most important things in God’s kingdom. The will of God is that we would worship him with mind, body, and spirit.

While the world regards coffee as a must-have to get the day started, we know that we need it alongside some quiet time, prayer, and worship for the long day ahead.

16. Galatians 5:22 ESV

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”

We produce much fruit as we spend more time with the Lord God during quiet time, in prayer, worship, and praise. A morning coffee to go alongside this time with God is just icing on the cake.

One of the fruit of the spirit is self-control which is something we need to exercise as coffee lovers.

17. Proverbs 17:22 NKJV

“A merry heart does good, like medicine,

But a broken spirit dries the bones.”

When you’re joyful and feeling energized because of your cup of coffee, it feels like good medicine which heals and comforts you.

18. John 6:27 NLT

“But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man[a] can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”

Christ Jesus often used food metaphors to teach us important lessons about God’s kingdom. He is the Bread of Life (John 6:35), tells us we will not live by bread alone (Matthew 4:4), His food is to do what God’s will (John 4:34), and His body is remembered by taking bread at Holy Communion (Luke 22:19).

In this scripture, He tells us not to focus too much on the things of this world like coffee but to spend our energy on what will get us to experience eternal life with him.

It’s not that Jesus doesn’t want us to enjoy food or coffee, but He simply wants us to spend less energy on those things because they are extra gifts from God and not the main gift.

19. 1 Peter 5:10 NIV

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.”

Jesus Christ is the spiritual source of that grace which we find in God. He makes us strong, steady, and stable for life’s ups and downs.

20. Romans 14:21

“It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.”

If drinking coffee becomes a stumbling block for someone else because they are sick, addicted to coffee or pregnant, or for any other reason, we should not drink this beverage in their presence but rather show them love and be considerate.

21. Romans 14:5 NIV

“One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.”

This is quite a different verse on drinking coffee. There are a lot of modern concepts that are not clearly highlighted in the Bible. Is drinking coffee acceptable? Is social media right for Christians? Should we have mobile phones?

21 Interesting Bible Verses about drinking coffee Pin

We can debate about these issues but God wants us to use wisdom, seek godly counsel, use biblical principles, pray, and ask the Holy Spirit to be convicted in our hearts and minds on what is acceptable and right.

These interesting Bible verses on drinking coffee are a great way to be encouraged, inspired, and informed with Godly principles about taking this caffeinated drink.

Some of the key biblical principles are that coffee can cultivate friendships, fellowship, unity, relationships, and connection with others. It can make us grateful for God’s creation and gifts to us, and help us become hospitable, and generous in our homes and away from them as well.

We need to be wise in how we consume this drink and do it in moderation. There is a risk to coffee addiction and relying on it more than we rely on the Lord God for strength and energy.  We are to use coffee alongside our routines such as quiet time and fellowship with others.

At the end of the day, God must still be our priority, source, and the one who sustains us as Christians.
