Best Study Bibles for Women

God’s Word was not just meant for scholars, but for us, regular women to grow closer to Him and find guidance for our everyday lives. Finding the right study Bible will help in learning and understanding the word of God and will aid in your growth with God.

What to Look for in a Study Bible

God’s Word is alive and active and with the right Bible in hand, studying God’s Word can be so much easier and meaningful. A study Bible is just what you need to get started growing deeper into your faith.

Study Bibles come in different translations and types with tons of different features. The different styles of study Bibles are geared toward certain readers and their needs.

The best way to narrow down which study Bible to choose is based on what your specific needs are. Are you looking to grow in the historical knowledge of the Bible like people and places or are you looking for ways to apply the Bible to your everyday life?

Deciding on your specific needs will help in narrowing down which features to look for and what translation is best for you.

Study Bible Special Features

Maps, Timetables, and Charts-These helpful resources bring information together in one place for clarity and historical reference and will give a visual of where these events took place.

Book intros-Introductions give background information on the author and purpose for writing the book or letter and who they are writing to. This often includes dates, overall themes of each book of the Bible, and location, all for greater context.

Personal Backgrounds-These portraits give the history of important Biblical figures often including their family lineage, occupation, and what makes them the person they are. How did God use them and why.

Verse Breakdowns & Study Notes-Verses are broken down and explained in further detail often using historical and cultural references for clarity and understanding. The study notes often expand on how to apply the verse to your everyday life.

Journal Space -If you are a note-taker, this will give you room to write your revelations.

Concordance-This gives a list of scripture verses containing the same word or topic along with the definitions of words.

Different translations

The Bible was originally written mostly in Hebrew and Greek. With so many languages throughout the world, the Bible needed to be translated to reach different people groups in different nations.

There are many English versions to choose from. Each different translation was converted by different writers. While all translations have their strengths and weaknesses, scholars do their best to translate as close as possible.

Not all Hebrew or Greek words have a totally equal English equivalent which is why writers have to translate as close as they possibly can. This is one reason I love a study Bible because we get further clarification and context when the English word just doesn’t quite do the meaning justice as originally intended.

Translation Types

Thought-for-Thought– Thought-for-thought translations focus on the text’s intended meaning in a way we can understand today. Thought-for-thought Bibles can be easier to read but do rely on the translator to make certain interpretations.

Keep in mind many translators often work together which keeps a level of accountability for accuracy.  Common thought-for-thought translations include the New International Version (NIV), New Living Translation (NLT), and the Christian Standard Bible (CSB).

Word-for-Word-In word-for-word translations, writers try to translate the original Hebrew or Greek into the exact English equivalent. They try to avoid any elements of interpretation if possible but keep in mind not all Greek and Hebrew words have the exact English equivalent.

Word-for-word translations would be as close as possible to the original text. Because of this, they may seem a little harder to understand for some readers. Common examples of word-for-word Bibles include the New King James Version (NKJV), the English Standard Version (ESV), and the New American Standard Bible (NASB).

Paraphrase translations-Paraphrase Bibles are much more simplified and easier to understand in our modern English. However, they are considered a controversial because they often have a high level of personal interpretation from the editors.

While these translations can be a helpful tool, they are typically not recommended for your go-to Bible for deeper studying. Paraphrase Bibles can be a good cross-reference if a little more clarity is needed. Examples of paraphrase translations include the Message (MSG) and the Living Bible (TLB).
